Iona Prep Physics Puzzles

Puzzle: What is your centripetal acceleration?

Here is the story:

The Adobe® company created a beautiful sample animation which appears on the next page. I supplied some realistic proportions. The idea is this: You are riding the Ferris wheel. (That's you wearing the red hat.) For the purposes of this puzzle we will assume your mass is 95 Kilograms. Find the magnitude of your centripetal acceleration while the wheel is moving.

STINK (stop-think) what measurements do you need in order to calculate the centripetal acceleration?

O.K. Get busy. (Ferris Wheel)

{Teaching note: Many times this kind of problem is stated in words such as "Given blah, blah, blah, calculate the blah. Presenting the problem in this alternate way makes the student think "What data do I need? How can I measure it?" and so on. This is much more difficult. Also, in this problem more information is provided than is necessary. -- It is not necessary to know the mass.} EDGE will be a wonderful teaching tool!
