Directions:

In the applet the symbol for object distance is p (in class we use Do) and the symbol for the image distance is q (we use Di).

  1. Set the applet so you are using a mirror with focal length of 10 cm.
  2. Move the object until it is 30 cm from the mirror.
  3. Notice the location and size of the image.
  4. Now move the object toward the mirror until it is located at the center of curve (20 cm.) It is important that you keep the object the same size while you are moving it.
  5. Describe what happened to the location and size of the image as the object moved from 30 cm to 20 cm. Put your answer in the box below.

  6. Now continue to move the object from 20 cm in toward the mirror until it is almost at the focus (red tick mark at 10 cm). Describe what happens to the location and size of the image as the object moves toward the focus. Place your answer in the box below.

  7. Now continue to move the object from the focus in toward the mirror. Describe what happens to the location and size of the image as the object moves from the focus toward the mirror. Place your answer in the box below.

  8. Look up the meaning of REAL and VIRTUAL images. Write the definition in the box below.

  9. As the object moved from 30 cm in to the mirror when was the image real and when was it virtual? Type your answer in the box below.
